Air December 19, 2001

Thank you Mark, and good morning everyone. Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house .... Well, forget that, it's neither yet, though next week at this time it will be the morning after Christmas! Wow, where does a year go? Just a reminder of the upcoming Ag Computing Expo here in Junction City on January 12th. Get your pre-registration in to the Extension office ASAP so we can get meals lined up!

We're to that time of year when a lot of work around the farmstead doesn't seem to have that same sense of urgency. The year end holidays are nigh upon us and unless it's critical daily chores, we just don't seem to be quite as anxious to start any new tasks. It's that time of year when we need to be wrapping up one year so we can start the new one off fresh. No one wants to think about taxes yet, but the next few days would be a good time to see where we are and maybe get caught up. Then when January gets here, finishing up the end of the year might not seem quite so bad! Perhaps this is the year that you buy that ag accounting software and actually start to use it with the new year. Do Not buy ag accounting software now and plan to do all of your 2001 records with it. That isn't fair to anyone and will only lead to frustration and computer program that you won't use because of that frustration. But whatever method you use, it's better to get started now, rather than waiting until the clock is running and the stress level rises.

Between now and when I'm here next week, we will have gone through the Christmas holiday. It's a special time of joy, excitement and activity. A lot of you will be on the road traveling some place special. Regarldess of whether you are traveling five miles or five hundred miles, you need to be traveling with care, caution and sober alertness. The holiday travel will start on Friday or Saturday for many of you. Keep an ear tuned to local weather forecasts as a possible winter storm is advancing on Kansas and planning to be here just in time for the weekend. We saw tragedy after the Thanksgiving Holiday when an ice storm hit to the south of us. Don't be so busy with holiday planning that you get broadsided by a winter storm. I want to have you around to celebrate the new year with us. This is Chuck Otte, Geary County Extension Agent, with Ag Outlook 2001 wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas.
