AIR November 24, 1999

Thank you Mark, and good morning everyone. After the past 45 days, it was great to see any amount or kind of precipitation early this week. Maybe that’s what we needed to get our Thanksgiving week off to a good start!

Secondly this morning, let’s let the snow to the north and west serve as a wakeup call that even in spite of the record setting warmth this November, we need to get ourselves and our vehicles winter ready. A severe winter storm could be upon us in a matter of days, and then you’re fighting with everyone else who waited until the last minute to get ready for a wintery blast. Don’t trust the almanac, the woolly bears or any thing else. All it takes is one winter storm to forever change your life.

Thirdly, and this falls right in line with number two, today starts what I call the six week holiday travel season. For the next six weeks there’ll be a lot of travel. Travel to be with family over the holiday, travel for shopping, travel for fun. Be prepared and be safe. Allow plenty of time for slow traffic, delays, and the amount of time it takes to go somewhere at the speed limit or slightly below. Plan all your travel times like you could still only go 55 miles per hour and I’ll guarantee that you’ll never be late. We never needed faster speed limits, just better time management. While you are out on the road stay sober, stay alert and drive defensively. Travel with your headlights on all the time, never assume that the other driver is going to do the safe or sane thing. Lets get everyone into the year 2000, which really is the last year of the 20th century.

Finally this morning, let’s all take a little time to stop and think about all that we have to be thankful for. We truly are blessed to be living in this location at this time. Look around the world at all the natural disasters, political strife and other problems and all of a sudden things like evolution debates, who wins what sporting event and what Y2K really means becomes pretty insignificant. To borrow a phrase, we really do have a wonderful life....

This is Chuck Otte, Geary County Extension Agent, with Ag Outlook ’99 wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.
